Sometimes known as a four-year degree, a bachelor's degree can be awarded from both colleges and universities. A bachelor's degree can be earned when a student has determined which field of study they wish to pursue (called a major) and then they follow a set curriculum full-time for approximately four years in order to be awarded a diploma.
You will normally find that students completing a bachelor's degree fall into two tracks — Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.).
The Bachelor of Arts track often leads the student into coursework for a master's degree. However, unlike with the Associate of Arts degree, when you have a B.A., you are stating you have a full and completed education in your field of study. Many times students pursue a B.A. degree due to the fact they have two separate fields of study, sometimes called a double major.
The Bachelor of Science, however, normally gives a student coursework designed to lead them straight into a specific field of employment. The coursework is geared more toward the technical, instead of the general, side of the field of study. When someone pursues a B.S. degree, this is the field of work they plan to pursue once they have graduated.
In many subject areas, like physics, psychology, and biology, you can either receive a B.A. or a B.S. degree. Some describe the difference between a B.A. and a B.S. degree like this: the first degree is often chosen when you want to teach about a subject, while the second degree is often chosen when you plan to pursue a career in a subject.
Many fields of study, like law and medicine, require further education after a bachelor's is earned. However, when it comes to gaining employment, a bachelor's degree is many times the most often looked for credential.
